The family of North New Guinea languages of Papua New Guinea and Indonesia is a branch of the Western Oceanic languages. It may be a synonym of the Ngero–Vitiaz languages.
A 2008 analysis of the Austronesian Basic Vocabulary Database[1] supported the unity of the Ngero–Vitiaz branch, including Numbami of the Huon Gulf branch, with 85% confidence. The Schouten languages were found not to be North New Guinea, but part of a (reduced) Western Oceanic, and the Sarmi–Jayapura languages were not investigated.
